If you’re planning to travel with your pet, whether within the United States or internationally, a pet health certificate is required. We have provided information and tips below to help you prepare for your upcoming travels.
start preparing early
Because travel paperwork can take several weeks to process, we recommend starting early:
- Domestic travel: Begin preparations at least 2 months in advance
- International travel: Begin preparations at least 4 months in advance
- Rabies titers (Hawaii, Australia, etc.): May require even more time
Each country has its own travel regulations, so part of our process includes determining exactly which documents and tests your pet will need. For current guidelines, visit USDA Pet Travel.
What to Know Before Traveling With Your Pet
- Bring your pet’s vaccine history
- Carry their most recent rabies certificate
- Have a veterinarian-issued health certificate that confirms a recent wellness exam
Every airline has different pet policies. Some follow federal/state rules, while others have their own requirements. Before booking, check with your airline and ask:
- What are your pet travel policies?
- Do you allow pets in the cabin?
- Do you offer cargo space for larger pets, and does this affect flight options?
- Are there specific carrier requirements?
- What are your pick-up and drop-off procedures?
